Successful business professionals know the secret to getting ahead: Make the most of your opportunities. As Churchill pointed out, opportunities may first appear to be difficult situations. What is your first response when you’re confronted with a difficulty? Do you leave it for someone else? Or do you move into the difficulty, ask for help when you need it, and find a solution?

Obstacles are inevitable for people establishing their careers or businesses. Career and business goals are seldom easy to accomplish. They require hard work, focus, and drive. Problems along the way help us expand our creativity and innovation. They prod us into developing new ways to reach our goals.

American inventor Thomas Edison had over 1,000 patents – along with tens of thousands of failed inventions. Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Some opportunities may slide into our lives and require very little effort from us. But opportunities that lead to our highest goals usually require persistence and a dedicated mindset.

You might already know some of the difficulties you may encounter on the way to your goal. Prepare yourself for these, but don’t be surprised when you are faced with new ones. Remember that opportunity sometimes disguises itself as a problem. Take on the challenge of solving a problem, and you’ll likely be making the most of a hidden opportunity.
